What We Do Esso Luxembourg S.A.R.L. was officially established in 1920. Over the past eighty years, the history of the company in the grand duchy has run strikingly parallel to its Belgian sister company. Still, the Esso company in Luxembourg does have certain individual features such as the sale of aviation fuel at Findel national airport (up to 1996). The favorable fiscal climate enables fuel prices at Luxembourg petrol pumps to remain considerably lower than in surrounding countries. This has encouraged the 'cross-border' phenomenon, whereby Belgian, German and French residents in the border region pop across the border to shop and fill up with fuel at reduced prices. These local market conditions in combination with strict environmental legislation in Luxembourg have resulted in Esso Luxembourg taking a very individual course. In recent years, the emphasis has been focused on retail activities to an increasing extent. The Luxembourg Esso network currently includes thirty service stations, whereby the three largest stations in Wasserbillig, Senningerberg and Esch/Alzette are open 24 hours a day. Esso Luxembourg is operating these stations directly, in part because of their special significance for the network. Nice to Know Esso Luxembourg S.A.R.L. was set up in 1920. Today, the staff at Esso Luxembourg work in two administration buildings, in Bertrange and Leudelange. The official headquarters is located in Bertrange, at the same location as the Esso Luxembourg storage depot. The management and sales offices are located in Leudelange, to the south of Luxembourg City. The depot in Bertrange was converted and completely renewed in 1997. This is a 'sleeping depot', which means that it is only used to store fuels to comply with Luxembourg legislation. The Esso stations are supplied from other depots. Wasserbillig: Mega Service Station The largest Esso service station in the world is located in one of the smallest countries on earth, in Wasserbillig, a jewel in the Luxembourg crown. This sales point, located on the motorway to Germany, was built in 1996. Today, its function is to serve as a turntable for European passenger and goods traffic and it is designed to deal with a large flow of people and trucks. There are eleven multi-product pumps, twenty toilets, shower cubicles and a First Aid room. The forecourt covers 2400 m2. The shop is a small supermarket (260 m2), where motorists can find everyday articles and can take a break with a rich assortment of drinks and snacks, from fresh bread rolls to pizzas. Because of the size and significance of Wasserbillig, this mega station is managed directly by Esso Luxembourg. The purpose is to maximize the efficiency of the operational management and to maximize profits. In the long term, new infrastructure works will further increase the capacity of the station.
